Hi, I’m Leroy Slanzi.
I’m a school principal, author, and speaker with over 26 years of experience working in classrooms, walking hallways, and leading schools across British Columbia.
I’ve been a principal in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, which has given me a full view of how schools actually operate and where they begin to break down.
And after 26 years in schools, here’s the truth: Schools don’t struggle because of academics. They struggle because of emotional overload.
I’ve seen the same pattern repeat itself for decades. Students are overwhelmed and unable to focus. Teachers are carrying more than they can sustain. Leaders are caught between pressure from above and needs below. And that understanding doesn’t stop when I leave the school.
I’m also a father to Evi and Cruz, and I’ve lived through these same challenges at home, working through frustration, setting boundaries, building resilience, and supporting emotional development in real time. My work isn’t built from theory. It’s built from lived experience, both in schools and in my own family.
When the emotional foundation, at school or at home, is unstable, everything else begins to crack. That’s why I do this work. I developed the Emotional Schools Framework to help schools build emotionally intelligent cultures where students feel safe to learn, staff feel supported, and leaders can lead with clarity and strength.
This isn’t another program layered on top of everything else. It’s a way of working that becomes the culture itself, organic and natural in the way it grows through classrooms, hallways, homes, and leadership decisions.
I believe this deeply: Schools are emotional ecosystems. And nothing works until emotional intelligence is in harmony.
I grew up in Boston Bar, BC, as the son of an Italian immigrant, and I’ve spent my life working alongside Indigenous people and communities. Those relationships have shaped how I understand balance, responsibility, and what it truly means to lead with respect.
Right now, I’m the Principal of Lower Nicola Indian Band School, and I continue to support schools and districts through speaking engagements, workshops, and consultations.
I care deeply about the success of every person inside the schoolhouse, students, staff, leaders, and families.
Because when we get the emotional environment right, everything else becomes possible.
Students can’t learn.
Teachers can’t teach.
Leaders can’t lead.
Until emotional intelligence is in harmony… everything else is just noise.
If this resonates with you or your school, I’d welcome the conversation.
